The Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission will participate in the 8th Annual EUSAIR Forum in Sarajevo from May 23-24, 2024, where a 2-day innovation camp on “Strengthening innovation and smart specialisation for sustainability in the Adriatic and Ionan Macroregion” will be organized.

Innovation camps serve as community-building tools and allow for open discussion among stakeholders on specific challenges related to sustainable development and Mediterranean priorities. Multilevel place-based innovation has the potential to ensure socially, environmentally, and economically desirable transformation but requires new governance arrangements and capacity building of all involved actors.

Through the Innovation Camps, it will be possible to engage stakeholders in developing shared understandings of Mediterranean challenges related to the transition towards sustainability and promote cooperation to address them, supporting capacity building for public administrations and other stakeholders dealing with smart specialisation strategies and place-based development policies for sustainability.

This edition focuses on regional development challenges in depopulating rural areas as an increasing issue across the Mediterranean.

The event is structured as follows: a plenary session, with conferences on innovation policies for a sustainable economy, exploring opportunities for collaboration across the Adriatic Ionian and the wider Mediterranean region where representatives of European institutions, research institutes, regional authorities, and national representatives will be present. After the session, it will be proposed two thematic workshops:

The first one will explore the potential of the transformative innovation policy labs proposed by the Interreg Euro-MED Mission Innovative Sustainable Economy to support smart specialisation and territorial integrated strategies. The second one will focus on the challenge of depopulation in rural areas. Participants will work on this challenge with innovative methodologies and tools.
